SUZANNE WATZMAN [1976, Graphic Design]

Based in Cambridge, MA

Suzanne Watzman is a textile explorer who is inspired by the natural world around her, be it local to her Cambridge studio or global from many travels and residencies in India, Vietnam, Thailand, Greece and Morocco. During the pandemic, a deep dive into indigo refocused her work on natural dyeing. Long walks became foliage collecting events, leaves became studies, and textiles became the canvas.

Now Suzanne’s work is an ongoing exploration of plant-based color, natural textiles and sustainable methods of working. Her practice is slow and thoughtful, using many techniques to create patterns and colors on textiles: dyeing with indigo, rust, flowers, leaves, bugs; using physical resists such as rope, clothes pins and grommets.

This is her love: the imperfect beauty that happens with the blending of earth elements and creative processes- it is ever inspiring and motivating, As each item comes out of the dye pot- Suzanne knows that each item will be one-of-a-kind and full of surprises!
