Paint has the ability to become the present moment and form a representation of Tao. Matt Frock’s artworks are an attempt to connect with the source and form a record of it. Frock says, “As my work becomes more about brush work and the mark, I feel closer to the mystery.” He sites artists Howard Hodgkin, Van Gogh and Monet for their color and technique. His paintings reference Nihonga style painting and its nature-first philosophy while composing the above influences within a Mondrian-inspired framework. The end result is a balanced, yet voluptuous movement of color that feels alive and otherworldly.
